To-day, in. its place, stands the Commonwealth Savings Bank, having direct links wlth the first savings bank which started so long ago.

It is difficult to imagine what Newcastle was like 111 the days when Hunter Street and Bolton Street werer rough waggon tracks winding between the trees and beside the river.

The first mention of any part of Newcastle can be found m the log of Captain Cook's ship "Endeavour," wherein was written on 10th May, 1770,'''Twelve noon
gentle breezes and clear weather ... a small clump of an lsland lymg close on shore." The island was, of course, Nobby's. Cook, however, sailed blissfully on,

"...a small clump of an island"

The booklet was kindly loaned to the University of Newcastle by Robert McLardy.

The original document is held in a private collection. This publication is not available for viewing at Cultural Collections Reading Room, and no higher resolution images are available.

Where we lived when we first moved to Newcastle, 71 Tooke St, Cooks Hill. The flats would have just been built then. There was a railway line, still working, on the left of this picture, that went up Bruce Street from Burwood Street up to the Junction (which was, of course, named after the junction on this railway line). From there it branched to go off to two coal mines.
